| Paul Kwinn: Guitar, Vocals | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Paul got a very late start in making music (especially when compared with the precocious Alisa). He'd always had a love for it, though, and in the middle of high school, he began 2 1/2 years of piano lessons. In college, he fell in love with the concept of sitting around singing and playing music with friends (long before he'd heard of filk circles). He borrowed his roommate's guitar and went off to the stairwell (great acoustics!) to teach himself to play, guided by the chord diagrams in music books. He later took finger-picking lessons to expand on his style. His only "gigs" at the time were two coffeehouse concerts in Davis's "Blue Mango", with two folkie friends. He wrote just two songs during this period, but one of them-"The Fall and Fallen of the Golden State"-is still played by Puzzlebox today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

After college, and a music-making hiatus of about 5 years (just nobody to play with or for) he started playing again with a friend at work about the same time that he discovered filk. He had started going to cons with his wife (artist Beckett Gladney) who eventually shoved him into a filk circle with his guitar. The crux moment for him in filk came when he played "By My Side" (from Godspell) one night in a circle, and found the audience not only thrilled with hearing this song, but joining in with loads of harmonies and counterpoints. The discovery of other people who actually "got it"-how cool it was to sit around making music-made him into a filker. His first filk con was the 1992 ConChord. He took the next step of attending OVFF in 1993. This led to a series of awards in song-writing contests at OVFF and FilKOntario. (See the Lyrics page.) Needless to say, that only encouraged him (you foolish, foolish filkers). Paul had always had a love for vocal harmony, but, sadly, no natural ability, training, or partners for actually doing it (the last issue being especially problematic), until joining up with Taunya and Alisa. He finds the concept that he is part of a group which is developing a reputation for their vocal harmony work to be very strange, but wonderful. Getting to work with talented people in a permanent group was a longtime dream, and he's thrilled that it's come true. In his real-world identity, Mr. Kwinn designs and programs computer games for The 3DO Company, in Redwood City. Check out "Deadlock: Planetary Conquest" (published by his former employer, Accolade). Besides being a cool game, the CD has a .WAV file (deadsong.wav) of his filkish tribute to the game. |
